PM Shehbaz Sharif Holds Imran Khan Responsible for IMF Delay in Pakistan’s Economic Reforms

On Saturday, Prime Minister Shahbaz on Saturday accuses Imran Khan of creating barriers to dealing with IMF. Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari asked global institutions for help to tackle economic conditions. In a statement, the PM said “protests taken out by the former ruling party were a part of Khan’s plan to foment instability in the country”. Shehbaz Sharif accept that Khan did not want the common man to come out of poverty. Khan first closes the IMF program and then he is resisting from courts. However, he could not fulfill his promises. He added.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also asked for help from United Nation for economic support as Pakistan is dying due to less reserved money. He described the delay in dealing with IMF as a cherry on the cake.

The foreign minister of Pakistan who was in New York for meetings on Muslim women and Islamophobia said on Friday while briefing that country is facing a perfect storm of crisis and we need your support to save Pakistan from defaulting. While answering a question Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said to a reporter that Pakistan was facing a difficult time and said some situations were not in our control.


“We were going through harsh conditions. Covid has also impacted the economic condition of the country. He said,” We then have the economic impact of the fall of Kabul where an economically functioning state on our border until a year ago collapsed which has impacted the region.”

“Another major factor was the Ukraine war which has impacted on a large scale Pakistan’s energy and food storage including Pakistan and developing countries which has created inflation. The most recent incident which affected Pakistan is climate change which had destroyed in form of floods also impacted the economy”. Bilawal added.

The terrorist activities in Peshawar and Karachi are also affecting the country’s economy. Additionally, negotiating with IMF is still ongoing and has not ended up. It has brought an economic crisis in Pakistan. Bilawal said,” The weakest and poorest in Pakistan society are facing burden more than anybody else which is why we insist and request to IMF to cooperate with Pakistan so we could provide relief to poor people of the country”.

The foreign minister said the Biden government has asked to double the economic support for Pakistan to $82 million for the fiscal year. This assistance is used to support the country in recovering from different crises faced in the last few years.
