In Pakistan, the cost of essential food items like eggs and chicken has seen a significant increase, further straining the financial burdens of low-income individuals and families across the country.
Official data provided by the Punjab government website reveals that in Lahore, the price of a dozen eggs has surged to Rs329, marking a substantial rise from last year’s Rs240.
Moreover, supermarkets in major cities such as Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, and Islamabad are offering packaged one dozen eggs at staggering prices ranging from Rs420 to Rs492.
Online grocery stores in Pakistan are also reflecting this trend, with plain eggs being listed at prices between Rs400 to Rs490, excluding any delivery charges.
On top of this, the price of chicken meat has witnessed a sharp increase, reaching Rs476 per kilogram, while live chicken is now being sold at Rs317 per kilogram.
The wholesale rate for broiler chicken stands at Rs305 per kilogram, and farm eggs have climbed to Rs329 per dozen. Notably, just yesterday, broiler chicken meat was priced at Rs468 per kilogram, and live chicken was selling for Rs312 per kilogram.
In the Pakistani market, the maximum price of live chicken has reached Rs338 per kilogram, with retail prices soaring up to Rs450. Meat prices are reaching as high as Rs1,150 per kilogram.
It’s important to note that chicken is a staple and widely consumed food item in Pakistan, and its prices can vary significantly across different regions and markets.
These price hikes are placing a substantial burden on low-income households, making it challenging for them to afford these essential protein sources. The government and relevant authorities may need to address this issue to ensure that these basic food items remain accessible to all segments of the population.
