In response to severe smog conditions, the Punjab government has implemented a partial lifting of lockdown measures in Lahore and eight other districts. As part of this adjustment, markets in these areas will be allowed to operate on Thursday and Friday, while educational institutions and offices will remain closed until Sunday.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning about the potential escalation of smog levels in central and southern Punjab in the coming week. Districts such as Gujranwala, Multan, Lahore, Bahawalpur, Faisalabad, Sargodha, DG Khan, and Sahiwal are expected to be affected.
Citizens are urged to take precautions by limiting outdoor activities, using masks when venturing outside, and staying informed about local air quality levels. Adequate hydration is also recommended to safeguard respiratory health.
DIG Operations Lahore, Ali Nasir Rizvi, has directed police officers to rigorously enforce smart lockdown measures. He expressed concern over officers remaining indoors until 10:00 AM, emphasizing the need for active participation to ensure the city’s functionality.
Under the smart lockdown, only emergency services will be operational, with all other businesses and activities remaining closed. The NDMA has proposed the installation of 50 large and 170 small bridges in the city to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance air quality. Additionally, compliance with section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code will be monitored by checking the number of occupants in vehicles.
It’s noteworthy that the incidence of asthma in Lahore is on the rise, with an average increase of 10,000 cases per day attributed to dust pollution and fog. In response, the caretaker Punjab government has taken measures such as the closure of educational institutions and offices in six districts, including Lahore, from Thursday to Sunday, to address this health issue.
