Karachi and Lahore to Welcome 1,000 Eco-Friendly Electric Rickshaws and 200 EV Buses

Daewoo Express, a prominent inter-city transport service provider in Pakistan, is set to usher in a new era of sustainable transport. Collaborating with Sazgar Engineering, the company aims to introduce 200 Electric Vehicle (EV) buses and 1,000 EV rickshaws in Karachi and Lahore over the next two years.

Green Commitment and Environmental Impact

Sheriar Hassan, General Manager at Daewoo Express, expressed the company’s commitment to pioneering cutting-edge transport technology in Pakistan. The initiative not only aligns with environmental protection goals but also seeks to enhance the Air Quality Index (AQI) through the adoption of green technology.

The First EV-Based Inter-City Bus Service

If the plans materialize, Daewoo Express will spearhead the first-ever EV-based inter-city bus service in Pakistan. The move is not only innovative but also addresses the growing need for sustainable transportation solutions.

Daewoo Express aims to finalize multi-million dollar financing for these projects by January-February 2024, collaborating with an Asia-based development funding agency. The company plans to have the electric buses operational on short inter-city routes by summer next year, with all 200 buses in service by mid-2026.

Custom-Made Electric Rickshaws

Sazgar Engineering will collaborate with Daewoo to assemble 1,000 custom-made EV rickshaws for use in Karachi and Lahore. This initiative not only embraces the benefits of electric mobility but also opens new avenues for eco-friendly ride-hailing services.

Short Routes for EV Buses

To ensure convenience for passengers, the 200 electric buses will cover short routes with a maximum distance of 225 kilometers. This eliminates the need for frequent charging stops during journeys and enhances the overall efficiency of the inter-city service.

Daewoo Express already possesses a manufacturing facility in Sundar near Lahore, acquired from Swedish auto manufacturer Volvo. This facility positions the company well for the production and assembly of electric vehicles, leveraging the expertise gained over the years.

Financial Discussions with AIIB

Sources reveal ongoing discussions with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) for approximately $24 million in project financing. While the company remains tight-lipped about this detail, the potential involvement of other financing agencies is hinted at, given the scale of investment required for these green initiatives.

In summary, Daewoo Express’s ambitious plans mark a significant step towards a sustainable and eco-friendly future for inter-city transportation in Pakistan. As the company navigates the financing landscape, the prospect of a pioneering EV-based bus service and a fleet of electric rickshaws holds promise for a cleaner and greener urban commute.
