Karachi’s AQI Soars to 179, Making it the Fourth Most Polluted City Globally

In a disconcerting update on Wednesday evening, Karachi found itself listed among the top five most polluted cities globally, with its Air Quality Index (AQI) hitting an unhealthy level. At precisely 06:40 pm, the AQI for Karachi reached 179, securing the port city’s position as the fourth most polluted city on the international scale.

Surpassing all contenders, Lahore claimed the unenviable first place with an AQI level of 283, categorized as ‘very unhealthy.’ Meanwhile, India’s capital, Delhi, secured the second spot with an AQI of 267, closely followed by Kolkata, where the AQI recorded at 265. Hangzhou, a Chinese city, rounded up the top five with an AQI level of 178, according to data from iqair.com.

Medical experts are sounding alarms and urging the public to take necessary precautions to mitigate the risks associated with smog.

Dr. Abdul Rauf, a seasoned family physician operating in the congested locality of Usman Gunj in Northern Lahore, advises, “Avoid unnecessary outdoor activities. If you must go outside, ensure to wear glasses and masks. Upon returning indoors, practice thorough hygiene by washing hands, face, and eyes. Extra attention should be given to the vulnerable populations such as the elderly and children.”

As concerns over air quality continue to escalate, staying informed about the current conditions and adopting preventive measures remains crucial for the well-being of residents in these affected regions.
