Authorities have been compelled to shut down the Lahore-Islamabad Motorway due to severe fog and dangerously low visibility in Lahore city and its neighboring areas.
Concerns over visibility prompted the closure of both the Lahore to Islamabad and Lahore to Sialkot Motorway M-11, causing significant disruption in the flow of traffic. To manage the increased load on internal and external routes within the city, Lahore’s Chief Traffic Officer (CTO), Ammara Ather, has issued directives for circle police officers to be present, accompanied by additional personnel.
In response to the heightened traffic within the city, the CTO emphasized the use of reflectors and flasher lights as indicators for drivers. This strategic move aims to enhance safety measures and mitigate potential accidents caused by reduced visibility.
Addressing the situation, the Punjab police have urged travelers to activate both front and back fog lights, emphasizing the importance of safe driving practices during adverse weather conditions. As a precautionary measure, commuters are advised to schedule their journeys during daylight hours in the foggy season.
This closure follows a similar incident last week when the National Highways and Motorway Police (NH&MP) took the decision to close Motorway M-2 and M-3 due to dense fog. The affected stretches, M2 from Thokar Niaz to Khanqah Dogran and M3 from Faizpur to Nankana Sahib, witnessed disruptions in general traffic flow.
Motorway police spokespersons reiterated the importance of using front and back fog lights for travelers, reinforcing the necessity to choose daytime travel during foggy conditions. As the authorities work diligently to manage the current situation, commuters are urged to exercise caution and adhere to safety guidelines to ensure a smooth and incident-free travel experience.
