Poultry retailers, shopkeepers, and wholesalers in Karachi have jointly declared a strike today, bringing chicken sales to a temporary standstill. This move by the Poultry Sellers Association is a response to what they deem as unnecessary and unjustified raids and arrests.
According to the association’s spokesperson, the decision to go on strike prompted by the issuance of search warrants by the administration without disclosing specific grounds. This has created an untenable situation for chicken sales as retailers are unable to operate without a clear understanding of the circumstances leading to the raids.
The Wholesale Poultry Association expressed concern that these actions not only disrupt business operations but also result in fines for shopkeepers and, in some cases, imprisonment. The association argues that a more transparent and accountable process should be in place to avoid unnecessary disruptions to the poultry industry.
Furthermore, the Sindh Balochistan Poultry Association has put forth a demand for the regular announcement of government-set chicken prices by the administration. This, they believe, would contribute to a more stable and predictable market environment.
As Karachi grapples with the temporary halt in chicken sales, the Poultry Sellers Association’s strike serves as a public demonstration against what they perceive as unjust practices. The industry stakeholders hope that their concerns will addressed, leading to a more streamlined and fair regulatory process in the future.
