Lahore, the vibrant heart of Punjab, grapples with the challenges of a growing population, notably the daily grind of traffic congestion. However, a ray of hope emerges with the upcoming inauguration of the Capt. Karnal Sher Khan (Shaheed) Flyover, formerly known as Ghora Chowk Walton Road.
Scheduled to open to the public on December 22, 2023, at 4:00 pm, the Ghora Chowk Flyover is a pivotal component of the Signal Free Corridor initiative. Aimed at mitigating traffic snarls from Gulberg to Defense Morr, this ambitious project seeks to redefine Lahore’s traffic landscape and provide a smoother daily commute for its residents.
The genesis of the Ghora Chowk Flyover Project follows the success of underpass constructions at Kalma Chowk, which, while redirecting traffic, led to bottlenecks at Khalid Butt Chowk and Ghora Chowk. In response, the Punjab Cantonment Board and Defence Development Authority collaboratively undertook the construction of a 3-lane Flyover at Ghora Chowk, a crucial element of the Signal Free Corridor initiative.
At the core of the Ghora Chowk Flyover’s success lies a meticulously crafted traffic diversion plan. This plan aimed to redefine traffic patterns, opening new routes and alleviating congestion at critical intersections. The groundbreaking ceremony, symbolizing transformative change, occurred on July 17, 2023.
As the Ghora Chowk Flyover takes flight, it promises to revolutionize commuting in Lahore. Innovative traffic diversion strategies aspire to consign traffic congestion to the past, offering commuters seamless journeys through this critical corridor. This marks a new era in Lahore’s transportation landscape.
Beyond improving traffic flow, these plans contribute to the city’s infrastructure development and pave the way for a greener future. By streamlining traffic and reducing idling time, the project actively supports lower carbon emissions, fostering a healthier environment for all Lahoris.
