The Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC) is ramping up its readiness in light of the forecasted rainfall on March 1. KW&SC’s COO, Engineer Asadullah Khan, has called for increased vigilance among all officers, including the Chief Engineer of Sewerage.
Engineer Khan stressed the need for all equipment, such as jetting, suction, rodding, sewer cleaning machines, and dewatering pumps, to be fully operational. He further directed Superintending Engineers and Executive Engineers, along with their teams, to remain on-site in their respective areas.
As part of the preparations, machinery has been strategically placed along the city’s main highways to minimize potential disruptions to residents. Drain cleaning operations have already commenced in anticipation of the rainfall. To counter possible power outages, water supply and sewerage pumping stations have been equipped with backup generators.
The spokesperson for KW&SC highlighted the challenges posed by the city’s sewage system, which is not designed to handle rainwater discharge. The accumulation of solid waste, debris, and garbage, which often block sewer lines during rainfall, further complicates the situation. To address this, KW&SC has begun efforts to secure manholes on main roads.
In response to the rain forecast, the Deputy Mayor of Karachi, Salman Abdullah Murad, announced that all leaves for relevant officers and staff have been canceled. He urged them to stay alert during this period. An emergency desk has been set up by the Department of Municipal Services, as revealed by the Deputy Mayor during a high-level meeting.
