Heavy Rain Expected in Karachi This Weekend Due to Westerly Systems

This month, Pakistan set to experience the influence of two westerly weather systems entering via Balochistan. The first system, of lower intensity, is likely to impact Balochistan exclusively. However, the second system, due to arrive on March 9, carries a 50% probability of inducing rainfall in Sindh, including Karachi. This winter season has already seen five such systems.

The Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology anticipates a decrease in cold weather across the province, including Karachi, from March 6. The country will witness the entry of two successive western systems from Iran via Balochistan.

Karachi’s Chief Meteorologist, Sardar Sarfraz, reports that following the departure of the recent rain-causing western system, two new systems will enter Balochistan. The first, arriving today, is of low intensity and expected to impact Balochistan only. However, the second system, arriving on March 9, is stronger according to instrument data and may influence the climate of Sindh, including Karachi. A more detailed forecast will be available in the coming days.

Karachi’s official weather station, Pehalwan Goth, recorded a minimum temperature of 11.1 degrees Celsius, a two-degree drop from the previous day, and a maximum temperature of 26.2 degrees Celsius. Jinnah Terminal Airport Weather Station reported a minimum temperature of 10 degrees Celsius.

In rural Sindh, the lowest temperature of two degrees Celsius recorded in Mohenjodaro.

The Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology forecasts a likely decrease in the ongoing severe cold wave across the province, including Karachi, from March 6. Northeasterly winds from Balochistan expected to prevail in Karachi until Wednesday afternoon, with southwest sea winds likely to blow on Thursday.
