Provincial Minister Sharjeel Memon announced a major crackdown on illegal bus and taxi terminals in Karachi. This decisive action aims to regulate the city’s transport sector and enhance commuter convenience.
Shuttle Service in Karachi
Sindh’s Transport and Mass Transit Minister, Sharjeel Memon, revealed plans to launch shuttle services from various points across the city. This initiative is set to offer commuters a more organized and reliable transport option.
Memon addressed the delay in the city’s Red Line bus rapid transit (BRT) project, attributing it to negligence during the caretaker government’s tenure. He assured that upon completion of both the Yellow and Red Line BRT projects, Karachi will boast significantly improved infrastructure.
The minister also touched on the issue of Chingchi (Qingqi) rickshaws, which continue to operate under a court stay order. He mentioned that an alternative employment scheme is being developed for those working in the transport sector to mitigate any adverse effects.
EV Bus in Karachi
Highlighting Sindh’s pioneering efforts, Memon noted that it is the only province to introduce electric vehicle (EV) buses. He pointed out the success of the Pink Bus Service as a significant pilot project that paves the way for sustainable urban transport.
From January 1st to May 22nd of this year, authorities have issued 3,900 challans. Memon reported that 95 vehicles had their cylinders removed for safety violations, and 700 challans were issued for illegal parking. These measures underscore the government’s commitment to enforcing traffic laws and ensuring public safety.
