In a significant move aimed at providing relief to commuters, the Islamabad District Administration has announced a reduction in public transport fares by Rs10 in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. This decision follows a recent decrease in petroleum prices.
Irfan Nawaz Memon, the Deputy Commissioner of Islamabad, made the announcement on Monday after extensive discussions with transport union representatives. The fare reduction applies to public transport services for trips exceeding 30 kilometers. Memon emphasized the importance of adherence to the new fares and warned that non-compliance would lead to serious consequences.
To ensure effective implementation, the Deputy Commissioner has instructed all assistant commissioners to monitor the revised fares starting tomorrow. “Strict measures will be taken against any vehicle not adopting the new fares,” Memon stated.
This fare reduction comes shortly after a similar initiative in Rawalpindi. Last month, Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner Dr. Hassan Waqar Cheema announced a 5 percent reduction in public transport fares on all routes in Rawalpindi, also following a drop in petroleum prices. Dr. Cheema directed the Secretary of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) to display updated fare lists prominently at all bus stands and to form a special squad for daily fare checks to ensure compliance.
These measures reflect the administrations’ commitment to passing on the benefits of reduced petroleum prices to the public, aiming to ease the financial burden on commuters.
