The Day of ‘Arafah, falling on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, holds a special place in the Islamic calendar. This year, it’s anticipated to be on Saturday, 15th June 2024. This day is significant as it was when Allah perfected His religion, completed His favors upon Prophet Muhammad, and approved Islam as a way of life. This is referred to in Surah al-Maidah of the Holy Qur’an (Quran 5:3).
What is the Day of Arafah in Islam?
The Day of ‘Arafah is also known as Yawm Al-Waqf, the Day of Standing, as pilgrims stand before their Lord for extended periods, seeking His Divine Mercy. Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) stated that there is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Fire than on the Day of ‘Arafah. He comes close to those standing on ‘Arafah, then reveals before His Angels, asking, ‘What are these people seeking?’.
For those performing Hajj, the Day of ‘Arafah is the most significant day and the essence of the pilgrimage. The Day of ‘Arafah is a day of immense divine forgiveness, mercy, and blessings. It offers an opportunity for Muslims to cleanse their hearts, remember their purpose and destination, and seek Allah’s pleasure.
Arafah Fasting 2024
On this day, Muslims are encouraged to fast, increase acts of worship, make lots of dua, give sadaqah, and reflect and show gratitude. For those unable to perform Hajj, fasting on the Day of ‘Arafah is highly recommended. It expiates sins for the past and coming years. Allah forgives sins on the Day of ‘Arafah, even if they are many. We should not underestimate the immense mercy of Allah.
The Day of ‘Arafah is an extremely blessed day and holds immense spiritual significance for Muslims. Increasing acts of worship can be beneficial to maximise the rewards of this blessed day. It’s the day when Islam was perfected, expiation and forgiveness of sins occur, and Allah frees more souls from Hell. Allah expresses His pride to His angels at the time of ‘Isha’ on the Day of ‘Arafah, about the people of ‘Arafah. He says, ‘Look at My slaves who have come unkempt and dusty.’.
