KP Declares Public Holiday for 1st Muharram to Mark New Islamic Year
To mark the commencement of the new Islamic year, the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has declared a public holiday across the province on the 1st of Muharram. The official notification, issued by the Chief Secretary, stated that the holiday would be confirmed following the sighting of the moon.
The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, led by Maulana Muhammad Abdul Khabir, is set to convene on July 6 to observe the Muharram moon. This crucial meeting will determine the start of the new Islamic year. Concurrently, zonal committees will hold meetings at their respective headquarters to ascertain the moon’s visibility. The Chairman of the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will then officially announce the beginning of the new year.
In preparation for Muharram, both federal and provincial governments have implemented special security measures to ensure law and order during this significant period.
