Ashura Traffic Plan: Road Closures and Alternate Routes in Karachi

As the solemn day of 10th Muharram (Ashura) approaches, Karachi authorities have announced detailed traffic arrangements to manage the flow of vehicles and ensure the safety of participants during the Ashura procession. Significant road closures and diversions are in place to facilitate the processions and minimize inconvenience to the public.

Major Road Closures

The following key routes will be closed to general traffic to secure the Ashura procession route:

  • M.A. Jinnah Road: Closed from Gizri to Tower.
  • New M.A. Jinnah Road and Preedy Street: Restricted access only for procession vehicles.
  • Orange Line and Green Line Bus Services: Services will remain suspended on 10th Muharram.

Alternative Routes

To alleviate traffic congestion, the traffic police have provided alternative routes for commuters:

  • From Nazimabad to Garden: Use Lasbela Chowk and Nishtar Road.
  • From Liaquatabad to Lasbela Chowk: Via Teen Hatti and Central Jail (Marton Road).
  • From Hassan Square to PP Chowrangi: Use Kashmir Road, Society Light Signal (Shahrah-e-Quaideen), Nishtar Road (Lasbela Chowk) via Jail Flyover at Teen Hatti.
  • From Shahrah-e-Faisal to Numaish: Use Shahrah-e-Quaideen (Noorani Kabab), Society Light Signal onto Kashmir Road.
  • From Central Jail Gate (Jamshed Road) to Gowmundur and MA Jinnah Road: Via Gowmundur, Bahadar Yar Jung Road, Soldier Bazaar.
  • From Garden Zoo to MA Jinnah Road: Via Anklesaria, Gul Plaza, Coast Guard, Holy Family Hospital.

Heavy and Commercial Traffic

Special routes have been designated for heavy and commercial vehicles:

  • From Super Highway to MA Jinnah Road: Diverted to Lyari No. 10, Nazimabad Chowrangi No. 2, Habib Bank Flyover, Sher Shah, and up to Mauripur.
  • From National Highway to City Center: Use Shahrah-e-Faisal or Rashid Minhas Road, Stadium Road, Sir Shah Suleman Road, Hassan Square, Lyari No. 10, Nazimabad Chowrangi No. 2, Habib Bank Flyover, Sher Shah to Mauripur.

Security Measures

Only vehicles with special procession stickers will be permitted on the Ashura procession route. These vehicles can enter through the Shahrah-e-Quaideen Society traffic signal. Parking along the procession route is strictly prohibited to ensure security and the smooth movement of the procession.

The main Ashura procession will start from Nishtar Park and conclude at the Hussainia Iraniana Imambargah, following its traditional route.
