Punjab to Suspend Mobile Services on Karbala Martyrs’ Chehlum: Details and Affected Areas
In a bid to ensure security during the observance of the chehlum of the martyrs of Karbala, the Punjab government has announced a partial suspension of mobile services in selected districts. The chehlum, which falls on August 26, 2024, will see mobile networks being temporarily shut down in areas hosting mourning processions and majalis from 5am to 11pm.
Affected Districts
Mobile services will suspended in the following 10 districts:
- Rawalpindi
- Jhang
- Layyah
- Sargodha
- Bhakkar
- Mianwali
- Gujrat
- Gujranwala
- Chakwal
- Toba Tek Singh
These restrictions will specifically limited to areas along the routes of mourning processions and points where majalis held, with large crowds expected to gather. The rest of Punjab, including Lahore, will have uninterrupted mobile services.
Security Measures
This decision has made as part of heightened security protocols to maintain peace during the chehlum, which commemorates the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and the tragic events of Karbala. The Punjab Home Department has submitted a formal request to the federal government, based on recommendations from local police forces, to implement these preventive measures.
Authorities believe that the suspension of mobile services in these sensitive areas will help prevent any potential security threats, ensuring a peaceful observance of the chehlum.
Uninterrupted Services in Other Areas
While mobile services will be suspended in the aforementioned districts, they will remain operational in other parts of Punjab. This targeted approach aims to minimize inconvenience while prioritizing public safety.
The Punjab government urges residents and those participating in the chehlum observance to cooperate with the security measures in place to ensure a safe and peaceful environment.
