Reports circulating on social media about ATMs closed in Pakistan for two to three days due to a cyberattack have been denied by one of the country’s largest payment gateways, 1LINK Limited. The consortium, which operates the largest interbank network in Pakistan, started after rumors spread through WhatsApp and social media, warning people to avoid online transactions during this period. The message falsely claimed that BBC Radio had reported on the cyberattack.
However, BBC Urdu has dismissed these claims, stating that its last radio transmission in Pakistan was in December 2022, and no recent reports of a cyberattack have been aired. This misinformation led to confusion and concern among the public.
In its official response, 1LINK reassured the public that there is no cyber threat to the ATM or online banking systems. The company emphasized that the financial sector remains alert and that all necessary precautions are in place. The State Bank of Pakistan is also closely monitoring the situation, working with banks and 1LINK to ensure the security of Pakistan’s financial infrastructure and digital payment systems.
Despite the widespread rumors, there is no basis for concern, and the reports of an “ATM cyber attack today” are unfounded. The public is urged to stay calm and continue their banking activities as usual.
