Noel Tata, Ratan Tata’s stepbrother, has been named as the new chairman of Tata Trust, a position that holds significant influence not just over charitable work but also a major stake in Tata Sons, the parent company of Tata Group. This decision came after a meeting of Tata Trust on Friday, where Noel Tata was unanimously selected to take the reins.
For those who don’t know, Noel Tata is the son of Naval Tata and Simone Tata, and he has been with the Tata Group for the past 40 years. So, this is not a sudden change but a passing of responsibility from one family member to another. Noel has been actively involved with Tata Trust and served on various boards like Trent, Tata Steel, and Titan. His leadership at Trent has been impressive, with the company’s market value reaching ₹2.93 lakh crore. Plus, as managing director of Tata International Limited from 2010 to 2021, he helped grow its business from $500 million to a whopping $3 billion.
This move to make Noel Tata the new chairman of Tata Trust was kind of expected, especially because Ratan Tata didn’t name a clear successor. The group had to pick someone trusted and experienced to lead, and Noel Tata fits the bill perfectly. It’s also worth noting that his three children – Leah, Maya, and Neville – are stepping up as trustees of several charitable trusts under the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust, both of which play a massive role in managing the group’s charity activities.
