The Punjab government is all set to make artificial rain happen in Lahore to tackle the smog problem. Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb shared that a whole strategy has been rolled out, pulling in efforts from the Environment Department, Army Aviation, Civil Aviation, PCSIR, and the Meteorological Department.

Marriyum Aurangzeb said that they’re ready to kickstart artificial rain whenever needed to counter smog, and they’ve got the funds set aside for it. She mentioned that Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has given the green signal, instructing the Meteorological Department to back the rain-making efforts. The process will follow international standards, and each rainmaking attempt is expected to cost between Rs5 and 7 million.
Aurangzeb also pointed out that the government isn’t just banking on artificial rain; they’re cracking down on vehicles, factories, and other places churning out toxic smoke to curb pollution at the root. She explained that if these pollution control steps work out, they might not even need to go for artificial rain in the first place.
The public has been urged to help by reporting any incidents of crop burning, smoke from factories, or vehicles spewing too much exhaust. There’s even a helpline—1373—set up for people to call and report. The minister made it clear that this fight against smog is something everyone should be part of, as it can save lives and make the air cleaner.
The plan to make artificial rain will roll out in three phases. First, experts will analyze climate data to determine when the clouds over Lahore have enough moisture. Then, advanced machines will be installed to spread chemicals in the clouds, with the equipment automatically monitoring the weather. Finally, chemicals will be released into the clouds on certain days to trigger the rain. If all goes well, this will help clear out airborne pollutants, easing the smog situation and even benefiting agriculture by improving water availability and crop health.
