The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted that Karachi’s current heat spell will continue for the next three days. The temperature is expected to peak at 40°C today (Monday), with Tuesday seeing a high of around 39°C. Despite this ongoing heat, the PMD assures that there is no imminent risk of a heatwave.
No Heatwave Warning Issued for Karachi
According to the PMD, Karachi is not facing a heatwave threat as such conditions typically require a three-day continuous halt in sea breezes, which is not anticipated during this period. Generally, a heatwave also includes temperatures sustained at 40°C or above, combined with daytime humidity levels surpassing 60%. While Karachi will experience high temperatures, the city’s coastal winds are expected to mitigate extreme heatwave conditions.
Rising Temperatures in Rural Sindh
Alongside Karachi, rural areas of Sindh are also witnessing significant temperature rises. Cities including Sujawal, Thatta, Umerkot, Mirpur Khas, and Tharparkar may see temperatures as high as 42°C over the next few days. However, these areas, like Karachi, are not expected to encounter the more severe effects of a full-fledged heatwave.
Precautions During Karachi’s Heat Spell
Residents of Karachi are advised to take precautions to stay safe amid the heat, including staying hydrated, limiting outdoor activities during peak hours, and using protective measures like hats and umbrellas. Those particularly sensitive to high temperatures, such as the elderly and children, should take extra care.
