Schools Reopen in Lahore and Multan as Smog Intensity Declines
Schools in Lahore and Multan reopened on Wednesday following a decline in smog intensity. This decision comes after the resumption of academic activities in Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala earlier this week. The latest notification by the Environment Protection Department (EPD) confirmed the reopening of schools across all 36 districts of Punjab province.
Air Quality Index in Lahore
Despite improved conditions, Lahore continues to rank as the second most polluted city in the world. The overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of Lahore was recorded at 282 on Wednesday morning. The highest pollution levels in the city were observed at:
- Shimla Hill: AQI 523
- Jail Road: AQI 507
- Shahrah-e-Quaid-e-Azam: AQI 443
- DHA Phase VIII: AQI 229
SOPs and Timings for Schools
To protect staff and students from the lingering effects of smog, the EPD has issued strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for schools, including:
- School Timings: No school is allowed to open before 8:45 AM to mitigate traffic congestion and reduce exposure to smog.
- Mandatory Masks: Staff and students must wear masks while on school premises.
- Ban on Outdoor Activities: Outdoor sports and co-curricular activities remain suspended.
Traffic and Smog Management
The notification also highlights the need for staggered school schedules to avoid traffic congestion during peak hours. Academic institutions have been advised to strictly adhere to these guidelines to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Improvement in Air Quality
The reopening of schools marks a significant step toward normalcy as air pollution levels show signs of improvement. However, environmental experts urge authorities to continue monitoring smog levels and enforce pollution control measures to prevent future health hazards.
