Imran Khan Released? IHC Granted Bail to Former PM in Toshakhana 2.0 Case

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday granted bail to the former prime minister in the Toshakhana 2.0 case. Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb approved the plea, requiring two surety bonds of Rs1 million each, backed by separate guarantors.

The case, which has stirred significant public interest, revolves around allegations of misuse of influence and undervaluation of state gifts. The PTI founder’s lawyer, Barrister Salman Safdar, argued that the charges were vague, claiming the prosecution failed to identify a central accused or specify any direct wrongdoing. He maintained that the Toshakhana gifts were acquired as per policy and no law was broken.

Justice Aurangzeb also raised concerns about the previous government’s secrecy surrounding Toshakhana records, highlighting a lack of transparency even when courts demanded the information.

On the other hand, the FIA prosecutor accused the PTI leader and his wife, Bushra Bibi, of causing financial losses to the state by undervaluing certain gifts, including a Bulgarian set, and not registering them with Toshakhana. He further pointed out delays in Bushra Bibi’s indictment, claiming her absence in trial court hearings hindered the case’s progress.

After the hearing resumed, the court warned that the bail would be revoked if any misuse occurred. This decision has added another layer of complexity to the already heated political climate, drawing both criticism and support from various quarters.

As the legal battle unfolds, the case has become a focal point of national attention, highlighting issues of accountability and transparency in public office.
