In a troubling trend, WhatsApp account hacking has become a major concern across Pakistan. From ordinary users to prominent figures like Justice (R) Wajihuddin Ahmed and former CPLC Chief Ahmed Chinoy, no one seems safe. Karachi alone has seen around 50 complaints filed with authorities about such incidents, and the numbers are growing nationwide.
How Does WhatsApp Hack in Pakistan?
According to Additional Director FIA, Aamir Nawaz, most of these hackers operate from southern Punjab. They access accounts and message the victim’s contacts, pretending to need money urgently. Many unsuspecting individuals fall for these tricks and send funds, making it a lucrative scam for the fraudsters. Nawaz also mentioned that the FIA has managed to restore many compromised accounts and is actively investigating cases in collaboration with the Cyber Crime Circle in Multan.
How to Stop WhatsApp Getting Hacked
To avoid falling victim, the FIA has shared some practical tips for WhatsApp users:
- Never share your six-digit registration code with anyone.
- Use two-step verification for extra protection.
- Limit your profile photo visibility to just your contacts.
- Always verify money requests through a phone call.
- Stay cautious about suspicious links or messages.
Asad Baig, founder of MMFD, explained that hacking WhatsApp isn’t overly complicated if scammers get hold of your OTPs. They use these to infiltrate your account, leaving your privacy and security at risk.
