Karachi residents may soon experience a notable decrease in electricity bills, as K-Electric (KE) has proposed a reduction of Rs. 4.98 per unit in electricity tariffs under the monthly fuel cost adjustment. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is set to decide on this proposal today, January 15, 2025. If approved, the reduction will bring financial relief to consumers who have been burdened by soaring energy costs in recent years.
Proposed Rs. 7.17 Billion Refund for Consumers
K-Electric has also suggested a refund of Rs. 7.17 billion to compensate for the excess charges collected from consumers. The adjustment aims to return the overcharged amount, offering relief to households and businesses in Karachi.
Impact of Previous Electricity Price Hikes
This proposed reduction comes after years of significant electricity price increases. A report highlighted that during the tenure of former Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, electricity prices surged by Rs. 25.76 per unit, including a historic rise of Rs. 22.53 per unit in the basic electricity tariff.
Key tariff hikes include:
- July–October 2022: Basic electricity rate increased by Rs. 7.91 per unit.
- 2023: Tariff rose by another Rs. 7.50 per unit, with an additional permanent surcharge.
- 2024: Electricity prices increased further by Rs. 7.12 per unit.
These hikes resulted in a total financial burden exceeding Rs. 2 trillion for consumers.
Government’s Strategy to Reduce Electricity Costs
In response to rising tariffs, the government is exploring measures to ease the financial strain on consumers. Proposals under consideration include:
- Revising Agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs): This could lower production costs and electricity tariffs.
- Reviewing Electricity Taxes: The government is evaluating the taxes imposed through electricity bills to provide relief to households.
Karachiites Hope for Relief
The decision on K-Electric’s proposal is eagerly awaited, as it could provide much-needed respite to Karachi residents facing escalating energy costs. If NEPRA approves the reduction, electricity tariffs in Karachi will decrease by almost Rs. 5 per unit, marking a significant step toward alleviating the financial burden on consumers.
