Govt Reduces Electricity Prices Across Pakistan – Relief Announced for Consumers

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has announced a significant reduction in electricity prices for consumers across Pakistan under the monthly Fuel Charge Adjustment (FCA). This decision aims to provide financial relief to households and businesses struggling with high energy costs.

Reduction in Electricity Rates

According to the official notification, the national average FCA has been reduced by Rs. 2.1240 per unit, lowering the actual fuel cost to Rs. 10.8860 per kWh from the previous reference rate of Rs. 13.0100 per kWh. This adjustment brings a much-needed reduction in power tariffs across the country.

Lower Tariffs for Karachi and Other Cities

NEPRA has issued separate notifications detailing the new rates. Consumers in Karachi will benefit from a Rs. 3 per unit reduction, while those in other parts of the country will see a Rs. 2.12 per unit decrease. The reduced rates will reflect in March 2025 electricity bills, ensuring immediate relief for consumers.

The reduction for K-Electric consumers is based on the December 2024 monthly adjustment, while the cut for Ex-WAPDA distribution companies (XWDISCOs) consumers applies under the January 2025 adjustment.

Who Will Benefit?

The FCA reduction applies to most electricity consumers; however, certain categories are excluded from this relief, including:

  • Lifeline consumers
  • Protected consumers
  • Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS)
  • Prepaid customers

Government’s Efforts to Reduce Electricity Burden

In a previous move, the federal government reinstated FCA benefits for electricity consumers using up to 300 units and for agricultural tube-wells. This decision was made to ease the financial burden on households and farmers. Initially, the fuel adjustment charge relief was discontinued in June 2015, but the government has now taken steps to reintroduce these benefits.

Implementation and Compliance

NEPRA has directed Ex-WAPDA Distribution Companies (XWDISCOs) to ensure compliance with court orders while implementing the new rates. The regulatory authority continues to monitor electricity pricing to balance consumer affordability and power sector sustainability.

This reduction in electricity tariffs is a welcome relief for Pakistani consumers, providing a much-needed break from rising energy costs. With lower power bills expected in March, households and businesses can benefit from reduced financial strain.
