The Punjab School Education Department has officially announced that summer vacations for all schools in the province will begin on June 1, 2025, according to a report by
An official notification confirmed that schools across Punjab will remain closed starting June 1, as temperatures continue to rise sharply. Secretary of School Education, Khalid Nazir Wattoo, stated that the vacation schedule could be adjusted if temperatures increase further.
“In case of an unusual spike in heat, vacations may start a week earlier,” Wattoo said, highlighting that the decision prioritizes the health and safety of students, parents, and teachers amid extreme weather conditions.
Rising Temperatures and Climate Change Impact
Wattoo further emphasized that Pakistan is experiencing the effects of climate change, with disrupted weather patterns and more frequent natural disasters becoming common across the country. The decision to begin vacations early reflects a proactive approach towards protecting public health during intense heatwaves.
Heatwave Alert Issued by Pakistan Meteorological Department
The announcement follows a heatwave alert issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department, predicting soaring temperatures nationwide from April 26 to April 30. A high-pressure system is expected to develop on April 26, gripping most parts of the country by April 27, leading to a significant rise in daytime temperatures.
- Southern regions like Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan are expected to experience day temperatures 5-7°C above normal from April 26 to May 1.
- Upper regions including central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan may witness temperatures 4-6°C above normal from April 27 to April 30.
Public Health Advisory During Heatwave
Authorities have urged the public, especially children, women, and elderly citizens, to avoid direct sunlight during peak hours and to stay hydrated to prevent heat-related illnesses.
Farmers are also advised to adjust their wheat harvesting schedules accordingly and take necessary precautions to protect livestock. Rising temperatures could accelerate snowmelt in northern areas between April 27 and May 1, posing additional challenges.
Additionally, strong winds, dust storms, and lightning on April 30 and May 1 may pose risks to structures such as electric poles, trees, vehicles, and solar panels.
Citizens are encouraged to use water responsibly and prepare for possible unstable weather conditions forecasted by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) from May 1 to May 7.
