A powerful tremor shook Karachi, leading to a major security breach at Malir Jail. Cracks in the prison walls reportedly allowed 200+ prisoners to escape. The incidentraised alarm across the city as law enforcement agencies scrambled to regain control.
Following the Karachi earthquakes, which caused structural damage to various parts of the city, Malir Jail was significantly impacted. According to sources, the tremors caused visible cracks in the prison walls, prompting officials to evacuate inmates from their barracks as a safety measure. During this process, several inmates seized the opportunity to flee.
Sindh Prisons Minister Ali Hassan Zardari has taken strict notice of the incident. He demanded immediate reports from the Inspector General of Prisons and the DIG Prisons. He has ordered that the area be completely cordoned off and instructed that all escapees must be captured without exception.
Zardari also emphasized that officials found guilty of negligence would be held accountable. “We will determine exactly where the lapses occurred and ensure strict action is taken against responsible officers,” he said.
In response, police and Rangers launched a massive search operation in and around Malir Jail, sealing the area and attempting to re-arrest the escapees. Heavy gunfire was reported outside the prison as security forces tried to prevent further jailbreaks.
Authorities confirmed that while many prisoners were detained, several managed to break through damaged walls. Eyewitness videos circulating on social media show barefoot prisoners running through nearby streets. According to traffic police, a large group of inmates escaped by breaking the jail wall, leading to road closures for public safety.
