On Eid ul Adha 2025, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has granted a 120-day special remission in sentences for certain convicted prisoners across the province. This initiative aims to promote rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates convicted of minor offenses.
Who Is Not Eligible for the 120-Day Remission?
While the remission offers relief to many, it explicitly excludes individuals convicted of serious crimes. According to the official notification issued by the Sindh Home Department, the following categories of prisoners are not eligible for the 120-day remission:
- Condemned prisoners: Those sentenced to death.
- Convicts of serious offenses: Individuals convicted of murder, espionage, subversion, anti-state activities, terrorist activities, rape, kidnapping/abduction, robbery, and dacoity.
- Violations under specific laws: Prisoners serving sentences under the Foreigners Act, 1946, and the Control of Narcotic Substances Act.
- Financial crimes: Those convicted of embezzlement or causing loss to the national exchequer.
This selective approach ensures that the remission benefits extended only to those deemed less culpable, maintaining a balance between compassion and justice.
The remission granted under Rule 788 of the Sindh Prisons and Corrections Service Rules, 2019, following recommendations from the Inspector General of Prisons. The Sindh Home Department has issued the necessary notifications to facilitate the implementation of this remission across various correctional facilities in the province
