Air India plane crash near Ahmedabad has resulted in the death of 241 passengers, with only one person surviving. The tragic Ahmedabad plane crash occurred shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The aircraft, Air India flight AI171, was en route to London when it crashed into a college hostel near the airport.
According to officials, the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was carrying 242 people, including two pilots and ten cabin crew members. Only one passenger, seated near the emergency exit, survived. In total, 265 people died, including individuals on the ground. Several others sustained injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals.
The aircraft struck a residential complex for doctors during lunchtime, causing a fire. Authorities confirmed the transfer of all medical students from the hostel to local hospitals. Indian media confirmed the deaths of at least five medical students. Among the passengers were 11 children, including two infants.
Air India stated that the deceased included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, 7 Portuguese, and one Canadian. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was among the passengers.
The crash occurred during takeoff. Rescue teams and fire services reached the site immediately. An investigation is underway. Captain Samit Subhrawal, who had 8,200 flight hours, was in command. The co-pilot, Clive Kundar, had 1,100 hours of flight experience.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation confirmed the completion of the rescue operation. The US National Transportation Safety Board will assist in the investigation, and a UK team is also en route to join the probe.
Pakistan, the US, UK, and others expressed condolences. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and other global leaders reacted to the Ahmedabad plane crash with statements of sympathy. The crash is being investigated as one of the most serious aviation disasters in recent history.
