The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has officially announced a public holiday on 1st Muharram 1447 AH. The announcement was made through a notification issued by the Department of Administrative Affairs.
As per the notification, the holiday will be observed based on the moon sighting confirmation by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. All government offices, educational institutions, and businesses across the province will remain closed in observance of the 1st of Muharram.

Importance of 1st Muharram
The 1st of Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar and is a significant day in Islamic tradition. It is observed as Youm-e-Umar, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), the second Caliph of Islam. Hazrat Umar (RA) was assassinated on 1 Muharram in the year 23 AH (644 CE), and his leadership is remembered for his justice and administrative excellence.
Significance of Muharram
Muharram is considered one of the four sacred months in Islam. The month holds deep emotional and historical importance for Muslims around the world. The 10th of Muharram, known as Ashura, commemorates the tragic martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain ibn Ali (RA), the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), along with his family and companions at the Battle of Karbala in 61 AH.
KP Holiday on Muharram 1st Confirmed
The public holiday notification for Muharram 1st 2025 in KP has been issued ahead of the official moon sighting. Citizens are advised to follow announcements by the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee regarding the confirmed date.
