The Kiswa changing ceremony 2025 held at the Holy Kaaba in Makkah to mark the beginning of the Islamic New Year and the first day of Muharram 2025 (1 Muharram 1447 AH), on Thursday, June 26, 2025.
The ceremony began after Asr prayers on Wednesday, 29 Dhu al-Hijjah 1446 AH, and continued into the early hours of the Islamic New Year. The process overseen by the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque.
The new Kiswa produced over 11 months at the King Abdulaziz Complex in Makkah. It consists of 47 black silk panels woven and stitched together. A total of 68 Quranic verses embroidered on the fabric using 24-karat gold-plated silver thread.
Materials used in the 2025 Kiswa included 1,000 kilograms of pure silk, 410 kilograms of raw cotton, 120 kilograms of gold-plated silver thread, and 100 kilograms of silver thread. The total weight of the Kiswa reached approximately 1,415 kilograms.
A team of 154 skilled Saudi craftsmen carried out the installation. The curtain of the Kaaba door, measuring 6.35 meters by 3.33 meters, was the first part to be removed. The new covering secured using 100 fastening ropes without exposing any part of the Kaaba during the process.
The previous Kiswa respectfully cut into pieces and distributed to foreign dignitaries and Islamic institutions. The Kiswa changing ceremony 2025 remains part of Saudi Arabia’s annual tradition aligning with the Islamic new year and Muharram 2025 observance.
