Northern Areas of Pakistan on High Alert as Glaciers Melt: NDMA Issues Flash Flood Warning

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert on June 25, 2025, for northern Pakistan, particularly Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), due to rising temperatures, intensified monsoon currents, and a westerly weather system.

Key valleys at risk include Reshun, Brep, Booni, Sardar Gol, Thalu 1 and 2, Badswat, Hinarchi, Darkut, and Hundur. The alert follows increasing glacier melt, elevating flash flood threats to lives, livestock, agriculture, and infrastructure such as roads and communication lines.

A flash flood incident on June 25 at the Burundubar stream near Attabad Lake blocked access to the Luxus resort. Rescue 1122 evacuated 160 local and foreign tourists by boat. In Skardu, Barga Nallah flooding damaged homes and crops.

The NDMA urges the public to avoid glacier areas, stay informed via the “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” app, and report unusual water flows or glacier movements. Evacuation protocols and safety instructions must be followed strictly.

Ongoing efforts under the GLOF-II project include early warning systems, community training, and infrastructure development. Completion is expected by December 31, 2025.
