PTA Yet to Finalize Decision on 10th Muharram Mobile Service Suspension in Pakistan

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has not issued any final decision regarding mobile or internet service suspensions during Muharram 2025. According to official statements, any mobile service suspension will depend on real-time security assessments and consultations with provincial governments.

A high-level meeting chaired by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on June 25, 2025, confirmed that no blanket suspension will be applied. Instead, the PTA will implement targeted service suspensions if directed by the Ministry of Interior based on specific security threats, especially on the 9th and 10th of Muharram (Youm-e-Ashura).

Historically, mobile service suspensions have been imposed in select cities during Muharram processions. In 2024, mobile networks were partially suspended in parts of Punjab, including Rawalpindi, Rahim Yar Khan, and Mianwali, while cities like Lahore and Multan were unaffected. Karachi also saw partial shutdowns in areas like Steel Town and Malir in 2023.

For Muharram 2025, the Sindh government has requested mobile service suspension on Youm-e-Ashura. Similar requests from other provinces are expected as Ashura 2025 in Pakistan approaches. PTA will act on such directives after provincial security plans are finalized.

Additional security measures include social media monitoring by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency and deployment of security forces under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.
