Altaf Hussain Alive and Stable, Says MQM London; Dismisses Death Rumours as Fake

Altaf Hussain, founder of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), admitted to a London hospital on July 11, 2025, due to a severe illness, according to official party sources. The development triggered widespread rumors about his health, including unverified claims of his death circulating on social media platforms like X.

MQM leaders Mustafa Azizabadi and Qasim Ali Raza confirmed Hussain underwent multiple medical procedures, including blood tests, ECG, CT scan, X-ray, ultrasound, and a blood transfusion. They attributed the hospitalization to stress from ongoing legal cases in the UK, financial constraints, and political pressure related to Pakistan’s internal and external affairs.

MQM Denies Death Rumors

On July 10, 2025, social media post by @JN_Araain alleged that Hussain had passed away or was being kept alive artificially. This was followed by further claims by accounts like @mujhecryaraha and @news24tvchannel stating he was in ICU and in critical condition. However, MQM clarified on July 12, 2025, that Hussain is alive and under medical care. @PakistanCheck and @MurtazaViews also confirmed the party’s statement, calling death reports “fake news.”

Azizabadi stated that Hussain’s condition had improved and that treatment was ongoing. He added that while the situation was serious, it was not critical. This was supported by independent health status updates shared by verified sources on X, advising the public to rely on MQM’s official statements.

In March 2025, Lahore High Court resumed proceedings on a 2015 petition seeking a ban on Hussain’s media coverage. His 2016 speech, which included disrespectful remarks about Pakistan, led to an existing ban, which remains in effect.

Altaf Hussain founded MQM in 1984 to represent the Urdu-speaking Muhajir community. He has been living in London since 1992 and holds British citizenship. Despite internal party divisions and media restrictions, he continues to influence Muhajir politics through online speeches, particularly on TikTok. His 278th TikTok session in July 2025 focused on ethnic rights and political marginalization.
