Traffic congestion in Karachi expected to reduce as the Karachi Northern Bypass extends into the new M-10 Motorway project. The 57-kilometre Northern Bypass will connect with a six-lane 134-kilometre M-10 route through the Kirthar Mountain Range, linking Karachi directly to the M-6 Motorway at Jamshoro.
Officials said the M-10 project moved beyond a simple bypass upgrade. It now includes construction of a new 134-kilometre motorway along with the upgrade of a 23-kilometre section into a six-lane road. Once completed, the Karachi Northern Bypass and M-10 Motorway will provide a direct high-capacity route from Karachi Port to M-6 in Jamshoro.
According to Dawn, the project reviewed at a meeting between Federal Communication Minister Aleem Khan and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah. The meeting was informed that feasibility studies were being carried out by Nespak. Aleem Khan said the core objective of the M-10 and Karachi Northern Bypass upgrade was to create a high-speed link between the port and the national motorway network.
The Sindh chief minister highlighted that the M-6 would open opportunities for interior Sindh, while the M-10 and Karachi Northern Bypass upgrade would resolve major traffic issues in Karachi.
According to Federal Communications Secretary Ali Sher, the M-6 Motorway approved under the PSDP with an allocation of Rs363 billion. The National Highway Authority will implement the project in five phases. The Islamic Development Bank has committed financing for two sections, while a Chinese company has shown interest in all five sections.
Officials said the M-6 will complete Pakistan’s north-south motorway network, linking Peshawar to Karachi. The project expected to reduce travel time, improve road safety, and enhance port-to-upcountry connectivity. The M-10 and Karachi Northern Bypass expected to play a central role in easing urban congestion and boosting logistics for trade and regional development.
