No More Fingerprint Issues? NADRA Face Recognition for Elderly Citizens Announced

The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has confirmed that it is rolling out NADRA face recognition for elderly citizens who face problems with fingerprint verification. The step comes as many senior citizens report that fingerprints fade with age, making biometric verification difficult.

NADRA’s new face recognition system will serve as an alternative for those unable to verify identity through fingerprints. The authority stated that this upgrade will improve access for senior citizens in obtaining CNICs and other services. The move is also expected to reduce delays at registration centers.

Alongside the NADRA face recognition elderly citizens initiative, the authority highlighted other services:

  • Juvenile Cards continue to be issued for those under 18, valid until adulthood.
  • For child registration, at least one parent’s CNIC is required.
  • Divorce updates in NADRA records will require a Union Council certificate.
  • Karachi currently has 359 counters at NADRA centers, with expansion plans underway.

NADRA has not published a comprehensive nationwide implementation schedule of face recognition to the elderly citizens. The authority is still to affirm the technical specifications, eligibility conditions and privacy of data. The first announcements can however point to the fact that the system will be launched in major cities first and then it will be offered to the rest of the population.

To elderly citizens, when NADRA face recognition elderly citizens service is launched, they will find it easier to access the much needed identity verification without having to struggle with fingerprint mismatch. The step is also an indication of NADRA transitioning to the use of several biometric options in Pakistan.
