Pakistan Railways has declared some new changes in the shuttle train system to enhance connectivity within the area of Punjab and other regions in short distance. Pakistan Railways plans to launch a shuttle service between Lahore, Kasur, and Pakpattan, and officials have already presented the complete feasibility report.
The report contains the financial, technical, and passenger demand information to guarantee the seamless implementation of the report after its approval.
The new Pakistan Railways shuttle service meant to ease the congestion on the roads and offer cheap means of transport to commuters, traders and students across the three major Punjab districts.
There is also a proposed project of a Pakistan Railways shuttle service, between Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The shuttle will have the Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) that used to connect Margalla stations and serve passengers in a day. The Interior Ministry has promised to support safety in its operations and coordination with the Capital Development Authority (CDA) in route planning.
In the beginning of this year, Pakistan Railways introduced a special shuttle transport between Dera Ghazi Khan and Multan. Since 16 April 2025, the 227Dn / 228Up route has been in operation and this route has served the purpose of the passengers in the region of the state of Punjab and also enhanced the accessibility of the southern parts of the state.
The Pind Dadan Khan-Malakwal shuttle is still in operation in the Pakistan Railways shuttle service network. The train serves local commuters and workers on a 20 km route that it covers over a distance of approximately 35 minutes between the Malakwal Junction and Pind Dadan Khan.
The stability of funding and security are the two factors that determine the future of the Pakistan Railways shuttle service. The Lahore-Kasur-Pakpattan and Islamabad-Rawalpindi shuttles projects will enhance the mobility of the region when these projects get approved and opened.
