Islamabad Traffic Update: Major Roads Reopen After Days of Closure. Which Roads Are Still Sealed?

Educational institutions in Rawalpindi have reopened after four days, while major connecting roads between Islamabad and Rawalpindi are now open for traffic. According to Dawn.com, the reopening has eased congestion in most parts of the twin cities. However, the Faizabad Interchange remains sealed due to ongoing security measures linked to demonstrations organized by a religious group.

Islamabad Traffic Update

Officials confirmed that Murree Road from Rawalpindi to Faizabad remains blocked. Containers are still placed around the Faizabad Interchange, restricting movement between the two cities. The closure continues to affect traffic flow on key roads including IJP Road, Double Road, and Shamsabad link routes.

As per reports, while the rest of Rawalpindi’s major routes—such as Peshawar Road, Chaklala Road, The Mall, and Airport Road—are open, diversions remain in place to redirect vehicles away from Faizabad.

The Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro Bus Service remains suspended, though mobile and data services have been restored across most areas of both cities. Authorities have yet to announce when the metro service will resume.

Traffic Police sources cited by APP.com.pk confirmed that heavy vehicles are not being allowed to enter Islamabad. This restriction is expected to continue until the situation stabilizes.

According to APP.com.pk and Nation.com.pk, the Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) issued a revised traffic management plan to facilitate public movement.

  • Open Roads: Srinagar Highway (Chungi No. 26 to Chand Tara Flyover), Margalla Road (E-11 Flyover to F-6), Jinnah Avenue, Seventh Avenue, and Ninth Avenue from IJP Road to Shaheen Chowk are open under controlled entry.
  • Closed Routes: IJP Road from I-8 to Faizabad, Suhrawardy Road from Serena to Aabpara, and Ispahani Road from Radio Pakistan Chowk to Shamas Picket remain restricted.

Such updates are part of the official Islamabad traffic update plan to reduce the congestion and ensure the safety of people.

Current Traffic Situation in Islamabad and Rawalpindi

The removal of barricades has enhanced traffic movement within Rawalpindi. The reopening of the IGP Road, Double Road, and Expressway has seen the ease of intercity flow. However, the shutdown at Faizabad is still annoying to commuters who use this major route.

It is recommended that people should use other routes, especially Margalla Road and Srinagar Highway, until the Islamabad traffic update plan announces that everything is open.

The situation is also closely monitored by authorities. The majority of the roads in Islamabad and Rawalpindi have been re-opened; however, the few high-security zones, particularly around Faizabad and the Red Zone, are partially under lockdown.

The Islamabad traffic update indicates that conditions are improving but with ongoing diversions and limited access points. Travelers are advised to check local advisories before commuting between the two cities.
