The Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Usman Anwar has sanctioned a security enhancement throughout the province to protect the mosques, imambargahs, shrines, markets and other sensitive places in Punjab. The action can be attributed to a recent ruling by the Punjab government to impose Section 144 within Punjab as a result of increased security fears.
The new directive has also mandated all police formations to intensify field operations and visible presence in the areas of people gatherings. Dr Usman Anwar pointed out that the security arrangements in Punjab Police should also involve more patrolling along religious sites, highways and business centers to avoid any untoward activities.
Other officers, like District Police Officers (DPOs) instructed to go to the field and personally check the situation on law and order. The IGP repeated that peace and the preservation of the lives and property of the citizens is the paramount aim of the Punjab Police.
The Punjab Home Department has confirmed that Section 144 is enforced across Punjab until October 18, imposing a complete ban on protests, rallies, sit-ins, and public gatherings of more than four people. The use of loudspeakers, display of weapons, and distribution of sectarian or inflammatory material are also strictly prohibited.
The restrictions exclude weddings, funeral prayers, and official duties. Loudspeakers may only be used for Azan and Friday sermons.
Authorities stated that the step aims to prevent terrorism and maintain law and order, as terror threats in Punjab remain a concern. The government urged public awareness and compliance to avoid disruption of peace.
