PTA Mobile Tax: DG Amir Shehzad Calls for Tax Relief on Imported Phones
Brigadier (R) Amir Shehzad, DG Licensing at PTA, spoke on mobile taxes at the AI Conference. He said PTA supports reducing taxes on phones imported from abroad.
He clarified that PTA does not collect mobile taxes. The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) handles all tax collection on phones. Users often confuse PTA’s role, he explained.
“PTA mobile tax affects us too,” he said. “We pay the same taxes as regular users. PTA does not get free phones like free units. We follow the rules like everyone else.”
Shehzad said PTA is continuously explaining mobile tax regulations to help consumers understand charges. He added that support for tax reduction could benefit users across Pakistan.
Many users face high costs due to import duties. DG Licensing emphasized that PTA was not allowed to control taxes but it could only control telecom services. Mobile collections of taxes are still under FBR responsibility.
As a user that imports phones, it is necessary to be aware of PTA mobile tax regulations. The authority keeps up-to-date and direction manuals, and assists in enforcement. The strategy of PTA is to make mobile services transparent to the consumer.
