NED University Students Successfully Launch Driverless AI Car in Karachi

The NED University engineers have managed to test the Pakistani first driverless car based on artificial intelligence. The autonomous vehicle navigates college campuses and is fitted with sensors, AI programs and computer vision. It is currently at a high level of testing with the object detection, lane recognition and traffic signal recognition being tested to allow complete autonomous driving.

Pakistan’s First Driverless Car Tested at NED University

Engineers at NED University of Engineering and Technology have completed a successful test drive of Pakistan’s first AI-based driverless car. The autonomous vehicle ran smoothly on NED’s roads, impressing students and faculty.

Work on the car began a year ago at the National Center for Artificial Intelligence (NCAI) under the Department of Computer and Information Sciences. The team used an imported electronic vehicle, AI, robotics, sensors, and mapping technology to make it fully driverless.

Features and Technology

Dr. Muhammad Khurram, NCAI director and project lead, explained that the car now handles steering control and speed between 15–20 km/h. The team is testing object detection, lane recognition, speed limit detection, and traffic signal recognition. The AI system can judge oncoming traffic and operate in Pakistan’s uncontrolled urban environment.

The team conducts continuous road trials to improve performance. Engineer Inzamam Khan said, “Our sensors are strong. This car is among a few in the world navigating such complex city roads.”

The project started under former Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Soroush Hashmat Lodhi and reached a significant milestone under current Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Tufail Ahmed. The goal is a fully autonomous driving car in Pakistan, combining AI, computer vision, and robotics.
