In a pioneering move, the Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi, has announced a significant amendment to the Vehicle Rules 1969, extending legal protection to motorcycle Qingqi rickshaws across the province. The decision, unveiled during the 34th cabinet meeting on Monday, marks a transformative step towards ensuring the proper recognition and regulation of these popular modes of transport.
Under the revised rules, motorcycle rickshaws/Qingqi will now officially registered as three-wheelers. To facilitate this process, the regional transport authority has granted special registration authority status for temporary registrations. Following temporary registration, a four-month window will be provided for necessary modifications in the design and size of the three-wheelers, aligning them with safety standards.
In addition to this groundbreaking decision, the Punjab cabinet has greenlit an ambitious road infrastructure improvement initiative. Eighteen roads across the province set to undergo upgrades, enhancing safety for road travelers. The funds collected from toll taxes will earmarked for this purpose, contributing to a significant enhancement of road conditions.
Furthermore, the meeting brought about key developments in healthcare. The DG Khan Cardiology Institute officially designated a medical institution under the Punjab Medical and Health Institutions Act 2003, solidifying its role in advancing healthcare in the region. An administrative committee formed to oversee the institute’s operations and ensure efficient management.
In a bid to bolster healthcare services, the Punjab CM approved the commencement of nursing classes at Tayyip Erdogan Hospital. Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi also announced plans for a fully functional 180-bed Institute of Cardiology in Sahiwal, reinforcing the government’s commitment to enhancing medical facilities.
The cabinet meeting concluded with the approval of a pivotal project: the expansion and renovation of Data Darbar, a significant cultural and religious site. These comprehensive reforms underscore the government’s dedication to progressive governance, encompassing transportation, healthcare, and infrastructure development.
