The Sindh government has proposed over Rs. 20 billion increase in Karachi’s development budget for the next fiscal year, while recommending a reduction of more than Rs. 2 billion in the school education budget. Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah will present the budget in the Sindh Assembly on Friday.
The overall development budget is proposed to rise from Rs. 493 billion to Rs. 503 billion, with Rs. 183 billion under consideration for new schemes. Rs. 45 billion has been proposed under SDGs for MPA development funds, and Rs. 7 billion is allocated for each divisional headquarters.
The education development budget may increase from Rs. 32 billion to Rs. 38 billion, and health from Rs. 18 billion to Rs. 21 billion.
Karachi’s total development allocation is proposed to grow from Rs. 1.38 billion to Rs. 21.14 billion, including Rs. 12 billion for mega projects.
Reductions are proposed in some departments. The Local Government budget may drop from Rs. 74.37 billion to Rs. 66.11 billion, Home Department from Rs. 12 billion to Rs. 11.11 billion, and Services and General Administration from Rs. 32 billion to Rs. 10.91 billion.
School education is set to reduce from Rs. 20 billion to Rs. 17.82 billion. College education may rise from Rs. 3.99 billion to Rs. 7.10 billion, and universities and boards from Rs. 4.26 billion to Rs. 7.24 billion.
Irrigation is proposed to increase from Rs. 26 billion to Rs. 31 billion, and Public Health Engineering from Rs. 21 billion to Rs. 24 billion. The transport sector allocation may increase from Rs. 5.84 billion to Rs. 10.25 billion.
