In response to the prevailing cold weather conditions in Punjab, Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi has announced a one-week extension of Punjab schools winter vacation for students ranging from kindergarten to grade 1. The decision comes amid reports of approximately three dozen children succumbing to pneumonia in the province.
Expressing deep concern over the rising cases of pneumonia, particularly among children, Chief Minister Naqvi took decisive action during his visit to Children Hospital. He revealed that eight out of every 10 affected children were grappling with pneumonia, with a majority of the fatalities reported in infants below six months.
To address the alarming situation, the Chief Minister not only extended the holidays for schools up to class 1 but also decided to postpone all examinations scheduled for this month. Naqvi stressed the importance of preventive measures such as wearing masks and practicing regular handwashing, particularly in Lahore where the situation appears to be more critical.
In an emergency meeting at Children Hospital, Naqvi underscored the necessity of children wearing warm clothes to combat the surge in viral pneumonia cases, aligning with the recommendations of health experts in Lahore.
This announcement aims not only to safeguard the well-being of young students but also to curb the spread of pneumonia, reflecting the Chief Minister’s proactive approach to address the health challenges posed by the current weather conditions in Punjab.
