The Inter Boards Coordination Commission (IBCC) has approved a new grading formula, raising passing marks for matriculation and intermediate students across Pakistan. Under the revised system, passing marks have increased from 33 to 40, with grace marks extended from three to five. This policy will be implemented starting from the 2025 examinations.
Key Changes in the Grading System
- Increased Passing Marks: The minimum passing marks have been raised from 33 to 40.
- Grace Marks Adjustment: Teachers can now award up to five grace marks to help candidates meet the 40-mark threshold. Previously, only three grace marks were allowed.
- Subject Limitations: Grace marks can only be applied to a maximum of two subjects. If a candidate fails a third subject, no additional grace marks will be provided.
Approval During IBCC Meeting
The decision was finalized during a two-day IBCC meeting attended by chairpersons from educational boards across all provinces, Executive Director IBCC Ghulam Ali Mallah, and other education officers.
The meeting also focused on additional educational reforms:
- Fee Concessions for Orphan Students: A proposal to offer fee concessions to orphan students was approved.
- Orphan Status Box: Examination forms will now include an option to indicate orphan status.
Harmonized Academic Calendar for Medical and Dental Colleges
The IBCC also discussed streamlining the admission schedule for medical and dental colleges. All provinces agreed to:
- Conduct exams in March/April.
- Announce results by June/July to ensure timely admissions.
Implementation and Implications
The new policy aims to standardize grading across the country and offer a fairer evaluation for students. By increasing grace marks and passing thresholds, the IBCC seeks to maintain academic standards while providing additional support to students.
