New Grading System for Matric and Inter Exams Announced

The Sindh government has introduced a new grading policy for matriculation and intermediate exams, aimed at modernizing the education system. This initiative follows the Federal Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education (FBISE) in Islamabad, which has already implemented a similar system. Under the new policy, students will be evaluated based on grades rather than traditional numerical marks, and the previous ranking system (first, second, and third positions) will be discontinued.

Key Changes in the New Grading System

Starting in 2025, students will no longer receive marks but instead be awarded grades according to a percentage-based system. The updated grading scale, developed by the Inter-Board Coordination Committee (IBCC), is as follows:

  • A++ (Exceptional): 95% and above
  • A+ (Outstanding): 90-94%
  • A (Excellent): 85-89%
  • B++ (Very Good): 80-84%
  • B+ (Good): 75-79%
  • B (Fairly Good): 70-74%
  • C (Above Average): 60-69%
  • D (Average): 50-59%
  • E (Below Average): 40-49%
  • F (Unsatisfactory): Below 40%

Impact of the Grading Policy

The new system aims to eliminate unhealthy competition among students for top positions while encouraging a focus on individual academic improvement. Students will now strive for higher grades rather than competing for specific ranks. This is expected to ease the pressure associated with examinations and promote a more holistic approach to education.

Gradual Adoption Across Pakistan

While FBISE has already implemented the grading system, other provinces such as Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan have yet to adopt it. The move by Sindh to embrace the system marks a significant step toward nationwide standardization in education.

Implementation Timeline

The new grading system will officially be in place for the 2025 matric and inter exams. Students and educators are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the updated criteria to prepare for the shift from traditional marks to the grade-based evaluation.
