In a groundbreaking move to promote sustainable transportation and support students, the Federal Government of Pakistan has announced the distribution of free electric bikes (E-bikes) to 120 top-performing students across the country. This initiative is part of a broader effort to boost the adoption of electric vehicles and align with environmental goals. The announcement was made following a meeting chaired by Federal Minister for Industries and Production, Rana Tanveer Hussain, as reported by ARY News on Thursday.
Free E-Bikes for 120 Top Federal Board Students
The federal government is providing free E-bikes to 120 top students of the Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE) from across Pakistan. This step aims to encourage students to embrace eco-friendly transportation while also rewarding academic excellence. Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain emphasized the importance of this initiative as part of the broader electric vehicle policy.
Expansion of Electric Vehicles and Charging Stations
Rana Tanveer Hussain also revealed plans for expanding electric vehicle usage across Pakistan, with 39,000 E-bikes and 1,900 electric rickshaws available on concessional loans. An electric vehicle policy will be introduced soon, laying the groundwork for a greener future. Additionally, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has been directed to install electric charging stations at all petrol pumps in Islamabad, further supporting the growth of electric vehicles.
A major part of the plan includes the installation of 40 charging stations along Pakistan’s motorways and national highways. These efforts aim to make the country more accessible to electric vehicle owners and encourage the use of sustainable transport options.
Digitalization and Transparency in the Process
Minister Hussain also stressed the importance of digitalizing the process to ensure transparency in the distribution of electric bikes and other vehicles. In line with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision, Islamabad will serve as a model city for electric vehicle infrastructure and implementation.
Punjab Government’s E-Bike Initiative
In a parallel effort, the Punjab government has also increased the number of E-bikes under the Chief Minister Youth Initiative. Originally set at 20,000, the allocation has now been raised to 27,200 electric bikes. The initiative is designed to assist students, particularly orphans and female students, who will receive the bikes free of charge.
The Bank of Punjab has already approved loans for 20,000 students to purchase electric bikes. So far, 7,500 bikes have been distributed, with additional deliveries ongoing. Over 5,000 petrol-powered bikes and 2,000 electric bikes have been provided to students, and more than 6,500 electric bikes are set for delivery in the coming days.
With both the federal and provincial governments making significant strides to promote electric vehicles, Pakistan is set to take a significant step towards a sustainable, green future. By providing free E-bikes to students and expanding electric vehicle infrastructure, the government aims to reduce carbon emissions and create a cleaner, more eco-friendly environment for future generations.
