All Punjab educational boards have made a groundbreaking decision to administer matriculation exams for both science and arts streams in English medium, starting in the year 2025. This strategic move aims to enhance students’ proficiency in English and align educational standards with global benchmarks.
Under this new policy, the option for Urdu in question papers will phased out, ensuring a consistent language medium across all subjects. Additionally, beginning in 2026, all optional subjects for FA exams will also transition to English medium, further consolidating the shift towards English-based education.
The formal approval of this progressive policy is pending and expected to granted during the upcoming Punjab Boards Committee Chairmen (PBCC) meeting. This transformative initiative signifies a proactive approach by educational authorities to adapt to the evolving educational landscape and equip students with essential language skills for academic and professional success.
However, amidst these reforms, concerns have raised by Rana Liaqat Ali, the General Secretary of the Punjab Teachers Union, regarding potential challenges stemming from the language transition. Expressing apprehension, he highlighted the risk of increased student failure rates due to language barriers and emphasized the necessity of providing adequate training to teachers to effectively navigate this transition phase.
While acknowledging the valid concerns raised, it’s imperative to recognize the long-term benefits of equipping students with English proficiency, which is increasingly becoming a vital asset in today’s interconnected world. By embracing this change, Punjab’s educational system endeavors to empower students with the necessary skills to thrive in a globalized environment while ensuring academic excellence and competitiveness.
This bold step underscores Punjab’s commitment to fostering holistic educational development and preparing students to excel on both national and international platforms. As the educational landscape continues to evolve, Punjab remains steadfast in its dedication to nurturing a generation of well-rounded individuals equipped to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.
