In the midst of an intense cold wave gripping Punjab, particularly in Lahore and various other cities, there are speculations and demands for an additional week of winter vacations for school-going children. However, possible extension of winter vacations for Punjab schools is pending a decision.
Originally scheduled to conclude on January 1, 2024, the annual winter holidays for both government and private schools commenced on December 18, 2023, with an initial extension of 10 days. However, as rare single-digit temperatures persist in early January, online rumors are circulating, hinting at the possibility of further prolonging the winter break in Lahore and other parts of Punjab.
Despite the prevalence of these rumors and the increasing demands from parents to reassess school openings due to the prevailing cold wave, no official announcement regarding an additional extension has been made as of January 04, 2024. The School Education Department is yet to provide an update, and parents are urged to await any official communication regarding this eagerly awaited decision.
While Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Kashmir have already taken steps to address the extreme winter conditions by extending school holidays, with schools in AJK set to reopen on January 15, Punjab remains in a state of anticipation.
Apart from the biting cold, concerns are also rising about the deteriorating air quality in Lahore and other cities, adding another dimension to the challenges faced by the residents of the region.
Stay tuned for further developments as parents and students await clarification on the potential extension of winter vacations in Punjab schools.
