In a significant move to manage the summer heat, the Punjab government has officially announced a 30-minute reduction in the operating hours of government schools for the summer season. This change will be effective from April 7 to October 15, 2025, as per the notification issued by the School Education Department.
Revised School Hours for Single-Shift Schools
According to the new schedule, single-shift schools will now operate from 7:30 AM to 1:00 PM, Monday to Thursday. On Fridays, the school day will end earlier, with classes concluding at 11:30 AM. This adjustment comes as a relief for students and staff, as the earlier timings reduce exposure to the afternoon heat. Prior to this announcement, summer school hours extended until 1:30 PM.
New Timings for Double-Shift Schools
For double-shift schools, the morning shift will run from 7:30 AM to 12:00 PM, Monday to Thursday. On Fridays, the morning shift will be from 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM.
The evening shift will be held from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Monday to Thursday. On Fridays, the evening shift will be adjusted, operating from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM.
Strict Implementation of Revised Schedule
The notification emphasizes that the revised schedule must be strictly adhered to, and Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of District Education Authorities have been directed to ensure that the new timings are implemented effectively. Schools that fail to comply with these updated timings may face legal action.
Flexible Timing for Boys’ and Girls’ Schools
The government has also provided flexibility for boys’ and girls’ schools, allowing a 15-minute adjustment in the opening and closing times based on specific circumstances. This will provide schools with some leeway in managing local conditions or other factors.
With the new reduced school hours in place, the Punjab government aims to provide a comfortable learning environment for students during the summer months. These changes will not only reduce the strain caused by extreme heat but also help improve the overall well-being of both students and staff. Parents, teachers, and students are advised to stay updated on the revised timings and ensure timely attendance.
